Record Easter passenger numbers for easyJet

Budget airline easyJet has announced that it is to carry a record 700,000 passengers over the Easter break as people set off in search of spring sunshine.

This is a 19 per cent rise in the number of passengers taking advantage of the spring break compared with last year, the airline said.

Around 300,000 passengers will fly on routes out of London from Gatwick, Luton and Stansted airports.

Spanish holidays are set to be a popular choice with British travellers, with many heading for Alicante and Barcelona, while holidays in Italy will also be a hit, with large numbers flying to Turin and Venice, easyJet said. Nice and Geneva will also be top destinations.

Marianne West, consumer PR executive at easyJet, commented: "With the majority of passengers looking to soak up the sun or hitting the slopes to make the most of the last snow of the season, getting away from the unreliable English weather or DIY superstores seems to be the main objective."

The airline this week launched the first of two new Italian routes, a daily service from London Gatwick Airport to Pisa, the city which is famous for its leaning tower, which may well make Italy holidays more accessible for Britons.

It will also be launching a route to Palermo in Sicily in July.
