Cagliari
Cagliari, Italy - City of the Sun
As capital of Sardinia and also the
largest city in Sardinia, Cagliari is
situated on the Gulf of Cagliari and
has a population of 204,237 (as of 1991).
The city is a major port and industrial
center in Sardinia. With its gorgeous,
glistening beaches and Medieval presence,
Cagliari has been given the name "City of
the Sun."
A Brief History of Cagliari
Cagliari has ancient Phoenician origins.
The city was conquered by Rome in the year
238 BC, and suffered invasions from the Arabs
during the 8th and 9th centuries AD. During
the 11th through 14th centuries, wars with
Genoa led to the city's becoming a stonghold
of the Pisans.
The submarine base located in Cagliari was
bombed during World War II by the Allies.
Ancient Remains of the City
The city of Cagliari contains some very
precious remains from the Roman period.
The Amphitheater dates back to the 2nd century
AD.
The Cave of the Viper, which was a
Roman tomb, can still be seen. From the
15th century, towers of Pisan origin still
beautify the Cagliarian skyline, as well
as a mighty Castle. In the historical
district, an Aragonese fortress still stands,
along with other Medieval style buildings.
Things to See and Do in Cagliari
Spending a day at the beach of Poetto makes
a visit worth while. Poetto is one of the
most breath-taking beaches in Sardinia. You
can also take a tour of the harbor, where
much of the sailing in Italy takes place.
The Archeological Museum is a must see for
interesting historical facts. Also, don't
miss the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral (from
the 13th century), the Basilica of San
Saturnino (5th century), and the tower of
St. Pancras, which dates back to 1304 and
was constructed by the Pisans.
If you enjoy nature and birdwathching, you'll
be amazed at the Molentargius Lagoon. There
are around 200 species of birds (seventeen are
near extinction). The pink flamingos are
lovely to see!
Food and Fun
Cagliari is well known for its Italian
dishes and fresh fish specialties. From
grilled fish to roasted pig, there's
a variety to satisfy all tastes.
During the evening hours, the port becomes
flooded with night life as people enjoy the
local cafes and the pleasant warm temperatures.
Cagliari has a comfortable and mild climate
all year, making outdoor tourism fun and
relaxing. It's a great place to visit any
time of the year.
